My Review on The Passion of the Christ

Well, lets start off by saying that this movie is incredibly bloody and raw. There aren't any sugarcoated scenes where the violence and gore is reduced or censored. Do not bring little children to this movie. When I went into the theatre to see this movie, I did not expect to be moved by it. It wasn't anything that particularily affected me or anything I really thought about. My personal reason for wanting to watch this movie was to just understand the story of Christ, not as a religious figure, but as a historical one. The movie starts off pretty much as a normal movie would, except for the religious setting. Even as the punishments were being laid down, I was more in shock at the graphic scenes, then the actual story. Yes, I was disturbed by the violence commited and I wanted to see no more of it, but I still didn't grasp what made this movie so powerful. What really got to me was the ending. After Christ was crucified, he prayed for those who crucified him. He wanted to save those who had caused his blood to run and his bones to break. That is what amazed me, that is what made me realize how powerful such a simple message can be. And that is where the universal appeal of this movie comes into play. This movie does not deal with conflicts within society or conflicts within families that only society or familes and relate to. This movie doesn't require any former knowlege, experience, interest or role. This movie is very basic. It gets at the root of compassion and it understands how to express it what is possibly the most extreme form shown before a large audience. This movie makes us stop our commonplace thinking, it makes us reconsider what being a person, dealing with problems is all about. It is not just a relgious movie to embody the scriptures and the words of the Bible. This film explores the attribute of men that is long buried underneath the hatred of the world. The scene when Christ forgives his accusers demonstrates what lies beneath every man, woman, and child; compassion. It demonstrates the possibility of good and it embodies the essence of love. This movie may contain exteme amounts of gore and violence, but it is necessary to show the power of this movie. Religious or not, this movie has appeal, just go and watch it.
